Now we are in the 4th week of the 12-Week Challenge for Daytime Oxford County on Rogers TV, I think it's time to address a common question: why don't diets work?
Looking back to some of the popular diets, from the cabbage soup diet to the Atkin's Diet, there is one thing in common: they are designed for short-term weight loss. Most people who went on those diets have gained back the weight they lost, some would gain more. You can't blame the diets, because they did work. So what went wrong?
Let's look at the structure of a "diet" for a minute. You have to eat smaller portions, You have to eat foods you don't usually enjoy. You have to cut out beer or wine. You have to give up snacking on your favorite potato chips or chocolate bars. You can only have a couple of peas for dinner. The idea of a diet is to give up all the treats that you feel so much comfort when eating them. Human beings are pleasure seekers. We are designed to avoid pain. Dieting is painful, at least for some people. No wonder those diets don't work, because nobody can live with it long enough.
According to the 2015 Food and Health Survey by International Food Information Council Foundation, over half of Americans who see themselves as in excellent or very good health
are overweight or obese. This tells me that a lot of people are not aware of their own health status or the food they are eating. I am guessing this is probably the main reason most "dieters" can't lose weight or sustain the weight loss because they have no idea that what they are doing is not helping them at all. This is not their fault. They just don't have the knowledge or tool to 'get 'er done'.
What about this 12-Week Challenge? The program is designed to help the two participants lose a lot of weight, but they are also educated in healthy eating to sustain their goal weight. (Kirby Zylstra from In the Kitchen is doing a wonderful job helping them. Check her out here www.inthekitchenwithkirby.com) This is not all. They are also being closely monitored for any discomfort or adverse effects. If a diet is not done properly, it may do more harm than good. Our job as a weight-loss clinic is to help individuals achieve the weight loss goal safely. One day I got a text message from one of the participants telling me he was feeling dizzy with a headache. I went through a few questions with him and thought of a few possibilities. A few days later I put him on a few supplements to keep his nutrient balance. If you don't have the knowledge or support, a diet go wrong can potentially put you in the hospital.
If you are thinking of losing a few pounds, please contact All About Health Remedy'sRx and talk to one of our Weight-Loss coaches. You will get the knowledge and support, with a piece of mind that you are doing the diet correctly and safely. You will lose the weight, and keep it off.

Sweeten your laundry with The Laundry Tarts Giveaway!!
Few months ago, a mom came in with her cloth diaper dilemma: the ammonia smell in her cloth diapers. She tried everything to get rid of it from rising multiple times in the washer, to soaking the diapers in vinegar, rising by hand with hot water and nothing helped. So I was in the hunt for something that will get rid of the ammonia.
Did you know that ammonia in the diaper will burn tender baby skin?
During the search, I came across The Laundry Tarts, I was excited
because they are Canadian and they are passionate about the environment. The Laundry Tarts provide a natural
alternative to commercial laundry products. Their products are biodegradable, hypoallergenic, 100% vegan and free of phosphates, parabens and phthalate.
With great reviews online, I decided to get them in and try it out myself.
Strip It is formulated to strip unwanted odours, built up residues and bacteria from your garments. It's safe to use on cloth diapers too!!
I don't have any stinky diapers to try it with, however I do have our favourite towels we haven't used in awhile since I made a mistake of washing the towels with my daughters soiled clothes. The directions on the package was easy to follow. I filled our laundry tub with warm water and one tbsp of Strip It! After leaving our towels in the tub for about an hour, I threw the towels in our front load washer for a rinse cycle (I'm a little lazy when it comes to washing laundry by hand).
Result: the towels came out fresh, nice and soft, not even a little trace of odour. I'm happy to be able to use our favourite towels again.
So I tried The Laundry Tarts, we want you to try it too. Here's a chance to win your own Laundry Tarts Sampler. Here are a few ways to enter:
1. Like All About Health Remedy'sRx on Facebook (one entry),
2. Leave a comment below and/or on our facebook of your favourite excuse not to do laundry (up to two entrie),
3. Invite your friends to "Like" All About Health Remedy'sRx, make sure they mention who invited them (one entry).
Good Luck and stay tuned for the winner!

Expo 2012, Biggest Ever!
It was a stormy day with road closures, but it didn't stop the crowd. It was marked as our biggest event day ever. Nancy Ho from Dr. Ho's entertained our customers and patients for 7 hours, showing everyone the latest of Dr. Ho's pain relief products. We sold out our stock and had to issue rain checks! I was interviewed by Dan Henry from Heart FM who spent an hour on location. Many of our sponsors came to demo their latest natural supplements. My smoothie tasting and the healthy weight seminar by Elizabeth Stewart, RHN in the evening were also a hit. I think if it was a nicer day, we'd been even busier!

Another Successful Diabetes Clinic

November is Diabetes Month. Our Diabetes Clinic on last Saturday November 19th was another huge success. The clinic was sponsored by Lifescan, the maker of OneTouch Ultra2 meters. There were originally 7 appointments and all were taken up in a week. We opened 2 more spots and both were taken up soon after.
All our participants had a one-on-one diabetes education session with a RD/CDE, which took about 1/2 hour for each patient. Everyone learned about how to manage their condition with proper nutrition and blood glucose monitoring. All participants walked away with knowledge and a "Company's Coming Diabetic Dinner" cookbook!
We also provided a free sample of our gluten-free, low-glycemic whole grain, Cavena Naked Oats and a copy of the diabetes edition of Alive magazine to each participant. Special thanks to Anne Clark from Lifescan and Laurel, RD/CDE for spending the time with our patients.

Cancer Prevention Seminar, Our BIGGEST Seminar Ever!

Our Cancer Prevention Seminar on September 15th was a huge success! Over 2 dozen participants came to learn about how nutrition and lifestyle change can help prevent one of the most deadly diseases in modern society.
Nelson spent 2 hours on the topic and all the participants were absolutely stunned about the negative health effects from processed foods and what fresh, organic foods can do to help prevent cancer. He was so involved with our participants he almost missed his train to go back to Toronto!
I'd like to thank Nelson for taking the time to come to Woodstock and Melissa from Body Plus for providing goodie bags to all our participants.

Our 1 Year Anniversary Celebration, Saturday, May 14th
We had a wonderful 1-year anniversary celebration event last Saturday, May 14th. The weather was a bit rainy, but that didn't stop our supporters and customers. Lise Lapierre, founder of Amaravati Beauty Care, provided a informative "beauty booth" with information and product samples on her beauty line. She met with customers individually and discussed about the beauty of natural skin care. April from Body Plus also set up a table for our customers to sample some of our best selling VegeGreens and PhytoBerry, along with our newest and the most advanced protein supplement, I-Plx. Every customer received discount on the purchases. The introduction of Amaravati Skin Care line also gave our store another high-end natural skin care offering, along with our already extensive natural skin care products. Customers who signed up to our eNewsletter also got a chance to win a wellness gift basket, courtesy of Purity Life. Check out the photo album I posted for our anniversary event.

Healthy Leg Day, Another Successful Clinic
Today was our Healthy Leg Day, sponsored by Sigvaris, the maker of therapeutic compression stockings. Brad, the rep and educator from Sigvaris took on the fully booked appointment list and met with every patient to go over their individual needs and concerns about their legs.
Started at 10am, we saw patients with different leg conditions related to vein issues. From leg eczema possibly caused by varicose veins to patients with chronic medical condition with poor circulation, this was an eye opener for myself and all the patients who attended this clinic. During the consultation, when we felt there is a need for compression stockings, we offered a prescription to the patient to bring back to his/her physician to sign so we can schedule a fitting appointment after the actual diagnosis is made.
I learned today that diabetes and arterial disease which compression stockings are contraindicated. We wrapped up the clinic just after 1pm. I believe that all the patients who attended this clinic learned something new about their current conditions. Thanks to Brad for conducting this informative clinic.

Healthy Leg Day, Thursday, February 24th
Varicose veins are enlarged bulging veins with purple or blue colouring that are commonly found on the backs of calves or on the inside of the leg. They usually cause aching or swelling in the legs and are unsightly to look at. In serious cases, varicose veins can lead to complications such as dermatitis, skin ulcers and blood clotting.
Women are more likely to have varicose veins than men. Some other factors that cause varicose veins are pregnancy, obesity, long periods of standing, menopause, and aging.
Join us for our Healthy Leg Day on Thursday, February 24th from 10am until 1pm. You'll get to sit down with a vein specialist to assess your condition and answer any question you may have about keeping your legs healthy. This clinic is FREE! Hurry up and register. Spaces are limited.
